On Tuesday, 26 Elul 5772 (05.09.1972), early in the morning, eight terrorists from the Black September organization took over the Israeli delegation's pavilion in the Olympic Village in Munich, Germany, where 11 athletes were staying. During the takeover, they murdered wrestling coach Moshe Weinberg and wounded Yosef Romano. The terrorists tied the nine remaining athletes together and gathered them in the room of the wounded Yosef Romano. Yosef Romano died of his wounds in front of his bound friends.
The negotiations between the terrorists and the German authorities lasted almost a day and in the end, the nine remaining hostages were taken to helicopters, which transferred them to the military airport in Munich. There, after a failed rescue attempt, the nine Israeli athletes were murdered.
In Gedera, the event is also commemorated in an old monument placed at the entrance to Zigman Street, a street leading to the Darka Begin Regional High School.
The monument, which is clearly showing the ravages of time, reads:
“In memory of the eleven dear athletes who were murdered by my fellow immigrants at the 1972 Munich Olympics.”
