On Sunday, the 5th of Tevet 5761 (31.12.2000), at around 6:30 in the morning, the Kahane family left Jerusalem in their private car, where they had been observing Shabbat, and headed back to their home in Tufaach. Binyamin was driving the car and his wife Talia was sitting next to him. After about fifteen minutes, as they were driving on the Ofra-Shiloh road north of Ramallah, about 500 meters before the settlement of Ofra, fire from automatic weapons suddenly opened at the commercial vehicle. The shooting was carried out by three terrorists standing on a hill to the west of the road.
The husband Binyamin was killed on the spot, and his wife Talia was critically injured and later died of her wounds. The vehicle slid into a deep ditch on the side of the road, and the Kahane couple's five daughters were injured. (Their only son got out of the vehicle just a few minutes before the attack, to get to the school in the settlement of Beit El).
Talia was 32 years old when she died. Benjamin was 34 years old when he died.
Benjamin Ze'ev Kahane was the son of Rabbi Meir Kahane who was assassinated in New York City on November 5, 1990.
