On Friday afternoon, June 22nd, 2001, a team of soldiers went on patrol near the Doogit settlement in Northern part of Gaza strip. They noticed a SUV who got stuck in the sand.

The people at the SUV waved for help. Ofir Kit, 20 years old and Aviv Izak, 19 years old approached the SUV, the Palestinians ran away from the SUV and after few seconds it exploded.

Both soldiers were critical wounded and died shortly after. It was discovered that the SUV had a big bomb , 35 kilogram of explosives.

In their death the soldiers prevented a much bigger disaster as the original intention of the terrorists was to drive the SUV to a near by beach and explode it among the hundreds of people on the beach.

The memorial is located near Kibbutz Mefalsim.
