When Bernhard Shiffer 31 years old, arrived to Eretz Israel he joined Kibbutz Hzorea in Izrael Valley. Bernhard worked as a baker in Mishmar Haemek bakery. Despite the serious situation of the transportation and danger to who ever was going in the roads Bernhard drove to his work every day with his good friend Gabriel Lai. Gabriel Lai, 35 years old, was helping with the area dairy farming.
On March 11th 1948 the two were on their way back from yet another day at work. Near the Arab village of Abu-Zoreik, in the middle between Kibbutz Hazorea and Mishmar Haemek, they were stopped in an ambush, a dozen Arabs attacked their car, the two tried to defend themselves, and fought till the last bullet. Their gun was found empty with no ammunition.

Two years later their bodies were found in a nearby valley and brought to burial in their Kibbutz.
