The first person killed in Rehovot was a Yemenite Jew, Yona Hamami Kafra, 26 years old. It was on October 2nd, 1910, Eve of Rosh Hashana.
Yona who worked in few jobs came to his employer asking for his salary so he can buy products for the holiday. The employer asked him to go and collect a debt from one of the farmers, from the collected money Yona will get paid.
In the afternoon Yona walked to the farmer house and collected the money – Three gold napoleons. On his way back , twenty minutes’ walk from his house he was shot and killed, his pockets were turned out and empty.
A memorial stone is standing till this day in Rehovot on 108 Hertzel street.
